The Brief...

We have been asked to create a fully hierarchial rig and animation using it. We have to make it according to the rules of the CGSphere.com brief.

Basically, we have to make a rig based around a sphere, it can be anything we want, as complex or as simple as we like and then create an animation using the rig we made.

Information on the brief can be found here :- www.cgsphere.com

Hyerarchies....

We had a workshop to learn the basics of hyerarchy and parenting objects to model our rigs.

We had to make a basic Robot and parent it.

My Idea....

Okay, so I thought I'd relate my sphere to a game seeing as I'm on a games course I thought it would be fitting. I've recently been playing Valve's 'Team Fortress 2' and have been really enjoying it, so I thought I'd make a spehere based version of something from there.

One of my favourite characters of the game being the engineer, I decided to relate something to him.
One of the cool things the engineer can do is build and upgrade sentry guns. Therefore, I've decided to re-create a sentry gun but with a spherical twist on it. Sentry guns have 3 stages of upgrades and since the 2nd and 3rd are stupidly complex, I'll stick with the beginning sentry gun.

The gun i will be re-creating is the one on the far left of the image. The barrel on the back is what i will make into a sphere.

Progress...

I started by making the back of the sentry gun using a sphere. The back part of the sentry gun is located in the image below.
Here's my rough recreation of it with a sphere twist.

Next stop, the gun itself...

More Progress...

I've made the gun barrel and the box type thing that houses it and attatched it to the main body of the sentry gun....

Tripod Problem...

Here's my Sentry Gun so far....I've realised a slight problem as far as building the Tripod though. Because the sphere is so large, If I build the tripod the same as the original it would look out of proportion and unbalanced. So, I've decided to build it slightly different, either by putting an extra leg on the back for support OR by putting the 2 legs at the back and the 1 at the front. We'll see what happens.

The Animation,,, And More Progress...

I was thinking ahead at how I will animate my Sentry Gun.... So, I decided to go onto Team Fortress 2 and get some video clips of the Sentry in action to see how it pans and shoots (I also used it as an excuse to try out some new video render settings and colour correction, In hindesight I shouldn't have put the motion blur on, it makes it hard to see, but that's irrelevant). Here's a link to the the video I used:-

Also, here's an update on my Sentry Gun. I've so far made half of the Tripod, just need to make to 2 front legs and it's done :D

Finished!...

Well, here it is! My finished model of the Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun, with a sphere. Now, all that is left to do it square it all off and sort out the vertexes to completely finish it. Here's some pictures of the final product.

Final Pieces....

Here's my final render image of my Sentry Gun. Ive added spotlights from different angles to illuminate it. :-

And, here is my Sentry Gun placed on the CGSphere Template :-

Overall I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out, although I did simplify the tripod quite a lot, I still feel it looks good. If I could change anything, I would have changed the scale of it so it could fit onto the CGSphere Template a little better but it's a little late for that now.
